Dino was transported to the shelter with his mother, Sookie, and placed in the same kennel. He was terrified of everything, yet his mother was by his side. She constantly had the dog nestled up close to her. They couldn’t be separated. After being discovered roaming the streets together, the two were picked up as strays in Monroeville, Alabama, and sent to the busy shelter.
The dogs were hungry and needed to be rescued before they became injured.
Dino’s actions are typical of a mother-son connection.
“He’s a lot younger, and he doesn’t act like a dog who’s a mate — he acts like a dog who’s a child,” Paws Crossed Dog Rescue director Edi Kelley told The Dodo.
“He leans into her, and tucks his head underneath hers. He will not let her out of his sight, and he has to be touching her. If he is not physically touching her in some way, he is very stressed.”
They also saw Sookie was pregnant and on the verge of giving birth to her puppies. For safety considerations, the rescuers began removing Dino from his mother at night. And that didn’t work out. Every second he wasn’t with his mother, the adorable boy would shriek and cry.
While Dino is afraid of people and is wary of them, Sookie is considerably more socialized, prompting rescuers to suspect she has previously interacted with humans. Dino is wary of strangers and hides whenever they approach.
But the day finally came when Sookie and Dino were placed in a foster home together within the Paws Crossed Dog Rescue network. And Sookie ended up giving birth to 10 puppies!
Foster care will keep this family together until the puppies are about four weeks old. The rescue group will then start looking for forever homes for the pups with the hope that someone adopts Dino and Sookie together.
In the meanwhile, Dino’s foster parents will work closely with him to help him feel more comfortable in social situations. This will undoubtedly assist them in finding a home for the two dogs together.
