A month after the Camp Fire, a woman returned to inspect what was remained of her home and was surprised and relieved to learn that her dog had survived the blaze.
Andrea Gaylord said her favorite dog, Madison, was eagerly waiting for her to return home when she returned to her house in Paradise, California.
“You could never ask for a better animal,” Gaylord said. “You really couldn’t.”
Madison might have survived the fire, so Gaylord contacted Shayla Sullivan, an animal rescue volunteer, who checked on their home.
Sullivan was originally tasked with finding and caring for Gaylord’s other dog, Miguel. Miguel and Madison are brothers. Sullivan said she kept an eye on Gaylord’s property and left Madison, an Anatolian shepherd mix, food and water.
Gaylord returned home after the evacuation orders were lifted to inspect the damage for herself. Madison was waiting for her when she arrived at the property.
“Imagine the loyalty of hanging on and waiting in the worst of circumstances,” Gaylord remarked. “It was a very emotional experience.”
The Camp Fire killed 84 people and destroyed Paradise, a 150,000-person town in northern California.
