Tonka, the dog, and Sarah, the cat, were great friends who looked out for one another. With DogHeirs, Julie Nelson shared the story behind their unusual friendship, writing:
“Tonka is 9 12 years old and has the sweetest, gentlest soul I’ve ever met. Soon after we received him in 2004, Tonka and Sarah became great friends.”
“They used to have a lot of fun chasing each other around the home.” Tonka was always so careful with her when they were playing, as if he knew she was more fragile than he was.”
“After they’d finished playing, Sarah would groom Tonka by licking him all over his face and head, and then they’d fall asleep together, heads touching.” It was the most adorable thing!”
“Sarah passed away on November 15, 2013, at the age of 15 and a half. Tonka began resting with his nose in Sarah’s kitty bed after she died. I have a feeling he can smell her on it! At the same time, it’s both wonderful and devastating.”
