Abbey, the dog who played “Sam” in the apocalyptic zombie sci-fi action blockbuster “I Am Legend” and co-starred with Will Smith, is now 13 years old! The blockbuster picture has been in theaters for ten years, and Abbey is still going strong!
She is currently residing with Steve Berens, her personal trainer, and his family. “Now that she’s older, she doesn’t hear nearly as much as she used to. But she’s still kicking, and she still enjoys a ball and a bone,” Steve explained.
“When you work with a lot of performers, they’re not that interested in the animal — they see it as something the public will be looking at instead of them.” Will, on the other hand, was nothing like that. He realized that this was his co-star, and he was completely engrossed in it. I believe it was the fact that she liked him that made the difference.”
Will Smith’s family pet was killed in an automobile accident when he was a child, and as a result of his sadness, he pledged he’d never own another dog. Abbey, on the other hand, changed his mind, and he even asked Steve Berens if he could keep her!
“I was pleading with him.” I begged Abbey to let me have her. Please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please But, you know, she’s got her own family now, so it was just another one of those Hollywood flings.”
