Meet Higgins, a senior German shepherd who has spent nearly his entire life at the Humane Society of Preble County because no one wants to adopt him. The shelter didn’t want to give up on him, and the main reason was that Higgins had never given up on finding a forever home.

When Higgins was a puppy, he was taken to the shelter and adopted right away. Higgins returned to the shelter in 2012 after a bad experience in his first home. Renner told The Dodo, “We heard he was little more than a dog tethered to a dog home.” “A year later, someone came in with a stray dog, and it turned out to be him.”

Higgins hoped that the right person would come along and give him a home, but he was repeatedly turned down. Everyone assumed Higgins was sick after spending so much time in the shelter. “When he was in his kennel, his face had such a scared look on it that he was a touch terrifying,” Renner said. “Everyone just walked right by him.”

After 2,381 days in the shelter, Higgins finally got his forever home. After viewing Higgins’ portrait online and hearing his story, Brendon Reed, a 22-year-old man, fell in love with him. Reed knew right then and there that Higgins was the only dog for him. Reed told The Dodo, “He was such a lovely dog.” “He just appeared so adorable… I’m not sure how he wasn’t adopted.”

Renner was taken aback when Reed strolled into the shelter and stated, “I’m here to take Higgins home.” Higgins has finally found a father who loves him and makes him feel safe every day after six and a half years. He can now sleep on a plush couch, watch TV, run about his backyard, and lay around in the grass.

We are overjoyed to learn that Higgins will be a fantastic addition to Reed’s life. We hope you can share our enthusiasm for Higgins! If you want to learn more about Higgin’s adventures, follow him on Snapchat at @higginsdoggo.
